Back-to-School and diving in!

By now- everyone's back in the swing of things and
I am diving in full speed ahead with projects and updates!

We've started the year off partnering with schools from all over the Great Lakes region and the Milwaukee Public Museum with the "Rediscovery of the Lady Elgin" videoconference expedition.

Already cooking is an IVC book club and the book, "Hoot" by Carl Hiaasen. The book study will start in January- and I am creating a PBWIKI for participants to use throughout the project. Note: the PBWIKI is under construction- nothing too juicy there YET!

Also in the works is the Adventure Kids Learning IVC project from Guatemala in March 2009! I will be there hosting SKYPE connections from Mayan ruins and the village where we're installing water tanks.

LEST WE FORGET- the 4th Annual Wisconsin History Mystery in May for 4th graders across our great state! I'm shooting to pass 1000 students this year- SPREAD THE WORD!

Rediscovery Expedition of the Lady Elgin- Begins September 8th:
Take your students along on the Milwaukee Public Museum’s field expedition to the Lady Elgin. Known as the Titanic of the Great Lakes, this historic paddleboat steamer sank in Lake Michigan in 1860. The expedition begins the week of September 8th, 2008 with a live interactive videoconference where your students become the official storytellers/reporters of this exciting rediscovery expedition. They will see and hear from the divers first hand, and will be able to interact by asking questions. Then they will explore with the expedition team the artifacts, ROV data and maps to uncover what happened on September 8, 1860, find out who was onboard and why, and learn how this disaster is connected to their hometown!

Wisconsin History Mystery meets the Energizer Bunny!
(sounds like a horror movie title!)

With 14 connections completed and 3 more left- the end is near!

So far- over 600 students from Kenosha, Shell Lake, Boyceville, Lena, Gillett, Birchwood, Eau Claire, Waterford, Oconto Falls, Siren, Hillsboro and Mequon have learned more about their state via video conference!

Still more conections next week with Peshtigo, Kenosha and Eau Claire!

I ask anyone who took pics to pick 1-2 of your favs and email them to me if you'd care to share!

I'll be videotaping next week to put together a little something on search engine techniques and tips for next year's WHM!

When planning and practicing your preso- be sure students are at a microphone, speak LOUDLY, s-l-o-w-l-y and clearly.

Avoid choral reading- it's too hard to understand.

Anyone not speaking should be silent.

Keep all papers and props quiet.

Have fun practicing!

Q: Can we use computers or should we just rely on print sources?

A: USE THEM ALL- however- I caution against instant Google :-)

If you immediately go to Google- you'll have 19 minutes of "free time".

All of that being said- I encourage use of technology, however, you can build on citing sources as well if answers are quick to come by :-)

WOW- KUSD teacher's ROCK!

Quick update: Monday 5/12 and Tuesday 5/13 KUSD timeslots are full!

Nash Elementary has Monday and I even had to add a 1:30 connection- so if you are a state school looking for a late afternoon connection- this one is golden!

Bose Elementary has Tuesday- all slots!

Other schools that took the bait so far: Stocker, EBSOLA & McKinley.

IF you are a KUSD school still discussing- I don't have to tell you it's booking up. If we have to spill over in to the next week- I think it's a great problem to have!

Statewide 4th Grade Videoconference Project
May 12-16, 2008

Looking for a way to enrich your Wisconsin history lessons?
Pair up with a 4th grade classroom somewhere in our great state for
an interactive videoconference event!

Each classroom delivers a prepared 10-minute presentation with clues about any significant event, person, invention, activity or location from Wisconsin’s rich past.
You may use skits, songs, still images and/or original artwork. Creativity is encouraged!

After each class presents their “History Mystery,” students work as a team to research their
partner’s clues using any/all available resources: notes, print, on-line…

After the allotted research time, students have an opportunity to ask their partners three yes or no questions. If necessary, a re-evaluation period is granted before the mysteries are guessed and revealed.

Important Dates:

Statewide Registration: April 14th-18th

Partners Assigned and Participants notified by: April 25th

Equipment/Connection Tests: May 5th-7th

From Wisconsin to the Bahamas, hundreds of students met and exchanged facts, songs, cultures and friendships!

In a series of eight iChat connections between schools on Eleuthera and classes from KUSD at Stocker, McKinley El., Harvey and KTEC- students shared snow, cracked conk, national symbols, laughs and real-world learning!

Professional Development Brainshare: Israel to Kenosha

Today, teachers and administrators from Hillcrest School in Kenosha, Wisconsin USA met with teachers and administrators from Albayan and Yigal Allon AMAL schools in Tel Sheva,
Israel to exchange ideas and share information on their programs.

Through this iChat conference, teachers and administrators of schools with atypical
populations in two different countries had the opportunity to :

• Share educational theories and strategies
• Cultivate cultural awareness and exchange
• Expand the schools’ learning communities
• Open up the possibility of student videoconferencing and other school and student
exchanges

This is the first of several connections and I'll say it again- the more we think we are different from those across the globe- the more I realize we are the same. We share the same issues, concerns and passions for teaching that make us true educators.

Thanks to Carol and Barb Foye- our daughter/mother contacts that made this connection possible!

Why do I continue to be surprised when I get random emails from educators looking to videoconference?

Enter Nicole from Louisiana. Last Monday- I received an email:

"While researching video conferencing I came across your lesson on
descriptive writing to pen pals and the guessing game that follows, how
cute!"

We've now exchanged about 10 emails and had a fabulous phone call last Friday to get Jefferson Parish videoconferencing!

Nicole's busy assembling grant info, I'm drafting teachers and soon we'll be sharing literature circle's before you know it!

I begin this year with a "rebuild" attitude! Last year I was refocused to concentrate on media production so my DL baby had to fend for itself quite a bit. After a week of enthusiastic requests regarding so many VIDEO CONFERENCE questions and ideas- LOOK OUT!

Here's what's on the table as I blog:

WAY cool professional development initiative:
Desktop videoconferencing for mentors and their initial educators! iSights and webcams going in to the hands of new teachers so they can touch base regularly, seamlessly and anytime/anyplace with their mentors! Anyone out there finding success with Mac to PC desktop vc solutions? I've used iVisit in the past, now looking at xmeeting, Polycom PVX and anything else I can google!

Kindergarten Collaborations back in full swing:
K classes that meet regularly (within the district) to collaborate on common curricular units- The Neighbor Show, author studies, MLK and more. I've said it before and I'll say it again- some of the best collaborations I've seen have been with partners in our own backyard! VC technology is great for global accessibility- but don't forget that it opens your world to other students right in your own community! (our district has distinct urban AND rural schools)

This news story prompted me to MAKE TIME TO BLOG! (remember the old saying- "The shoemaker's children never have shoes"?)

Veteran videoconferencers look at this and say: "DUH- we've been doing this for YEARS- why doesn't the rest of the world get it yet?"

Descriptive writing put to the test via videoconference!

Two second grade classes:
Somers Elementary and McKinley Elementary

Two innovative teachers:
Judy Schantek (Somers) and Kerri Boyle (McKinley) that have never used videoconferncing in their classrooms before

One great idea:
Pair up penpals between schools, exchange letters describing themselves and form student "lineups" at one school while a
student at the other school guesses their penpal based on their description. Students at Somers were placed in front of
the camera in groups of four while the student at McKinley determined who their penpal was based on the letter they
received. Is it a boy? Do they have red hair? Is he short or tall?

Writing Sample:
"Dear Charlie, I have brown eyes and brown hair. I am a boy. I am missing one tooth and I lost the tooth like 2 years ago and the tooth has not come in yet. I do not have glasses and I have a round face. I do not have freckles."

What an amazing experience! I literally had goose bumps watching these students use deductive reasoning while using technology seamlessly. These teachers took a traditional, relatively simple concept and adapted it to align with 21st century learning needs. Best practice in action!

In the six years I have been in the wonderful world of educational videoconferencing- the classroom collaboration focus has really taken hold!

Tomorrow starts the monthly connections between kindergarten classes at Somers (teacher: Kim Frost) and Grant (teacher: Lynette Powers).

I've said it before and I'll say it again- some of the BEST videoconference connections happen in our own backyard! While it is grand to know you can connect anywhere in the world, sometimes across the county is as meaningful!

I see students in October connect for the first time with fear, shyness and sometimes tears- but by May- it's two classrooms of mini Oprah Winfreys and Charlie Gibsons! The communication skills they acquire using this technology are lifelong.

Our in-district connections have been so successful, more pair-ups are in progress!

Webcams and Videoconferencing...

Are you contemplating webcam use for classroom videoconferences? Is it a viable option?

Recently- a fellow Collaboration Collage listserv colleague requested info regarding webcams in the classroom. Here's my response:

While our district uses full-motion video as well as IP units, we are purchasing more and more iSight (Mac) cameras for many uses- including classroom applications.

Primarily we use webcam technology for teacher-to-teacher use within the district. We have found it immensely powerful for our initial educator mentor program. New teachers have instant access to their mentor and can observe classroom activity at any time.

We also use it for our two enrichment programs to strengthen curriculum alignment at separate locations.

Classroom applications included a collaboration project between a school here in Kenosha WI and a school in the Bahamas. One of our Library Media Specialists taught in the Bahamas and communicated regularly back to her home school and developed a series of cultural exchange connections. While the Bahamian school only had the laptop, iSight and an external microphone- our school projected the video on to a large screen and it really worked great.

I also know that during last year's Read Across America connections- I had several requests for webcam connections which leads me to think webcam use is indeed growing!

Now - the real issue with us was cross-platform webcam compatibility. While our district is primarily Mac, I have found MANY browser based methods to bridge that gap and I'd be THRILLED to share my findings with anyone that needs it. (Maybe WE could then do a collaborative project??? I have 23K students itching to use the technology!) My good friend and NECC co-presenter Scott Merrick (University School- Nashville TN) and I have tested quite a few. Mac and PC CAN play well together!

A request I received this morning from a teacher was "Can we show a video at one school and show it to the connected school via iSight?"
My response was-" let's get a copy of the video to the other school and just show it at the same time. "

Bottom line being- it isn't going to be the ideal situation all of the time- BUT we have ways of making it work. Is it ALWAYS ideal to use webcams? Probably not- HOWEVER- IF it's the only way we can make the connection- it will work- and it will be awesome! Webcam technology gets better everyday as well. There are great resources out there too for classroom-to-classroom connections using webcams.

Hey y'all! (see what happens when I start hangin with my buds from Tennessee?)

Well- I am here and all I can say is wow! One item to note is compared to IVC session attendance in NOLA 2004, I'd say the number of filled seats has tripled. I am SO thrilled to see that!

I also must state AGAIN that the BEST aspect of NECC is the human network that takes place. I have already met some amazing teachers and I know our paths will cross again (at least virtually) in the near future.

I have attended media content sessions as well- and continue to be amazed at the creative genious so many of you posess! Our students are so blessed to have so many enthusiastic visionaries guiding their path.

IF YOU ARE READING THIS before Fri 7/7- here's my shameless self-promotion of my IVC SHowcase session at 11:00am in 24C. Think NECC for the A-D-D crowd and you'll get a teacher collaboration session that mimics "SPEED-DATING". You have to experience it to believe it!

It's no surprise that collaborations are on the rise using interactive videoconferencing.

Join me, along with fab co-presenter Scott Merrick at NECC, Friday July 7th at 11:00am to catch a glimpse of successful projects, meet potential partners AND leave with a project in-hand (or at the very least- great ideas)!

Ok- this is a stretch in regards to videoconferencing HOWEVER maybe it could be "long-distance running technology"?

Apple and Nike have now teamed up to create shoes with built-in iPod sensors so you can data track your work-out and instantly access "power-boost" tunes! How cool is that?

It might even motivate someone like me to power run- I mean walk.

Have you heard the old saying, "A shoemakers children never have shoes?"

After weeks of vc flurry- I FINALLY had a chance to catch up on what others are doing in K-12 VC-land :-)

New York:
WOW! Andrea Isreli adding vc to a project called, "A Square of Life" (students measure a square meter of ground and record what they find) and comparing results between students in NY & AZ. Check out her blog posting on the exchange!

Michigan:

Ohio:
Students from Missouri and Ohio have been exchanging clues about their states and cities for the past month. The classes collected items that their students felt represented their community and sent them to each other through US mail prior to the videoconference. What an amazing problem solving activity that enhances geography, measurement, communities reading and writing!

Tennessee:
Scott Merrick (who I SWEAR has more hours in his day than ANYONE I know) is always seeking new and improved ways to communicate- podcasting, blogging, desktop IVC'ing AND gettin all WIKI with it! Wisconsin History Mystery

How does toilet paper tie in to Read Across America?

It all makes sense when a class from Texas starts their RAA connection by telling us that the most common place they all read was... in the bathroom :-) When they determined this- they decided to begin their presentation with a mini-science lesson "What happens AFTER you read and flush?" After a moment of "getting in to costume" (which really meant draping themselves in toilet paper) they explained to our Stocker Elementray students the process of sewer pipes and the journey to a water treatment plant. Then- a brief overview of the purification process- water gets re-admitted to a nearby, large body of water. For the kids in Texas- the Gulf of Mexico. For the kids in Kenosha- Lake Michigan.

After the fun and VERY informative intro- the kids took turns presenting their RAA program.

Knowing Wisconsin is a large manufacturer of paper products- I followed my hunch and took it to the internet only to find out that Wisconsin is home to the nation's top 3 toilet paper manufacturers: Charmin, Northern & Cottonelle! Add to that- the #1 toilet mfg- Kohler Corp. AND Glade Air Freshener (SC Johnson Wax)!!! WOW – and people just think we’re a bunch of cheeseheads!

Following presentations- we shared our newfound facts with the students from Texas- and wrapped up an amazing RAA session! Which is too bad- because the kids were really "on a roll!" ( I HAD to add that)

Did you ever have just ONE OF THOSE DAYS when nothing works?

How do you keep it all together when you have fifty 4th graders waiting to hear Tall Tales from a coupla Southern gents and no can do?

What do you say to fifty kindergarteners who are waiting, fidgeting and staring at you while painful audio feedback at the remote site makes your eyes water and your fillings hurt? (THIS, by the way was all before 11:00am)

I haven't even mentioned the teachers yet with patience that would rival Mother Theresa -

At what point do you give up and say- "Game over- ain't gonna work?"

NEVER! Because you know you'll MAKE it work even at 128k and the audio is FINE!

NEVER! Because you've now memorized all 3 IP numbers and you can redial faster than the speed-dial when you are dropped for the umpteenth time!

NEVER! Because you know all YOU had to get excited over in elementary school was the "DING" when your teacher let you advance to the next frame on the filmstrip that was accompanied by a tape recorded narrator!

NEVER! Because you KNOW there are 100 GOOD days when 100 students experience SUCCESSFUL, FLAWLESS connections that expand their world! Connections that promote collaboration, acceptance, diversity and global learning.

Students from 6 KUSD schools meet US figure skater Megan Oster!

Kenosha's own Megan Oster- nationally ranked US figure skater met with students from Durkee, Grewenow, McKinly MS, Prairie Lane, Roosevelt and Vernon.

Questions were fast and furious! Students wanted to know everything from how old was Megan when she started skating to how does she attend school on the internet! The Kenosha News covered the event in the Saturday, 1/21 edition.

"Where the Red Fern Grows" Book club & modern coon hunts!

Prairie Lane 4th grade teacher Dianne Epping and Grewenow 4th grade teacher Marci Wolke have joined forces with our friend in Georgia, Beau Sherman to create an amazing videoconference exchange!

Students are reading the novel, "Where the Red Fern Grows"- a story about a loving threesome that ranged the dark hills and river bottoms of Cherokee country. It is there that they set out to be the finest coon hunting team in the valley.

With the help of library media specialists Phil Bruno and Regina Baker, students will then discuss the book in a videoconference.

Enter Beau Sherman- a modern day ringtail (racoon) hunter and dog breeder from Georgia! Beau will meet with the kids and talk about everything from redbone coonhound dogs and sycamore trees to present day hunts and competitions. We'll even get to meet one of Beau's pups!

Following the book discussion connection, students will meet with Beau two more times and meet AKC Coondog judge Mr. Jimmy Philips and join a few southern gentlemen who are Tall Tale Champions!

Experiences such as these add deeper, richer meaning and understanding to "just" reading a novel.

2006 Leadership in Technology Winners- OUR VERY OWN...

KUSD kindergarten teachers Lynette Powers (Southport) and Kim Frost (Somers) have been selected as the 2006 Wisconsin State Reading Association's Leadership in Technology winners!

Their students meet via videoconference on a regular basis to share curriculum projects with their assigned buddies.

This year they've exchanged projects such as "All About Me", "Animal Riddles" and "Monsters". There are more connections scheduled, culminating with a face-to-face meeting in May! It's amazing to watch the progress of these students. From camera-shy to mini Oprah Winfreys in less than a year's time!

Congratulations Lynette and Kim! You are truly educators with desire and vision and THAT is what it takes to be leaders!

Behold the mighty power of the blog!

Keystone buddy (as well as good friend) Scott Merrick (University School- Nashville, Vanderbilt Center for Science Outreach and general renaissance man) has announced new blog and podcast plans. The concept is already way-cool and will only get better as more people tune-in. Although this content isn't directly EVC related, it is a superior example of ever-evolving technology communication.

Here's how Scott's idea came about:

"During the academic school years 2003-2005 the tech coordinators at my school created weekly computer tips cards for the teachers, printed and delivered them already singly-perforated for hanging on a ring, on a hook, on their computer monitors. Many are still hanging there. I just started thinking about how valuable these are and how they are just prime content for an audio cast, then I got to work on the concept and started recording."

The National Education Computing Conference has selected moi to present during their July event in San Diego. The IVC Showcase will create an opportunity for teachers to meet others interested in a classroom collaboration.

I am looking for a KUSD teacher that has participated in a "K2K" connection to connect with me via videoconference on Friday, July 7 at 1:00pm CST. You will only have to summarize your experience for 2-4 minutes from the ESC.

I know it's vacation, and here's an even more tricky request- I'd REALLY like to get a few kids from KUSD to chime in :-)

GUILTY ON ALL COUNTS!!!

Today- Peter Rabbit stood trial for trespassing and Mr. MacGregor was accused of attempted murder!

Defense and prosecution teams from Harvey Elementary (Mrs. Roach's class) put Mr. MacGregor, Peter Rabbit, Mrs. Rabbit and Sparrow on the witness stand for cross-examinations.

Jurors from Roosevelt Elementary (Mrs. Adams class) deliberated and found the defendants guilty on all counts!

An AMAZING job was done by all students and teachers! I know there are some future lawyers out there!

The lesson idea is from "Fairy Tales on Trial" which engages students in cooperative teamwork to create each case, to work as prosecution and defense teams, as well as to deliberate and make decisions.

What's next? Little Red Riding Hood suing the wolf for harassment? What about the Three Little Pigs accusing the Big Bad Wolf of vandalism?

Media Production Interactive Videoconference

A simple IP test with Max Graves at Northern Michigan University for an upcoming videoconference- turned in to a brainstorming session developing a program that will connect NMU broadcast communication students, public television crew (WNMU) and KUSD students!

The result is an addition to NMU's Career Pathway Interactive Videoconference (CPIV) Series. The media production installment will be hosted by WNMUTV staff, to include Emmy award winning Producers Sonya Chrisman, Bob Thomson, and/or Director of Broadcasting Eric Smith.

Discussion will focus on related careers, academic preparation, degree programs, job demand/growth, salary expectations, volunteer/intern opportunities, career options and student interests and backgrounds.

From the WNMU broadcast studios, we will be joined by students with Northern Michigan University Public Eye News, a live news cast produced, directed, and run by an all-student crew, for a behind the scenes look at a student run-production.

The Media Production CPIV is for students in grades 8-12. There is a $50.00 fee.

HS students from Tremper HS, Kenosha WI & Plainedge HS in NY met via videoconference and discussed social issues (see previous posting). Mr. McKim asked students the following question:

What was the value of the videoconference with Massapequa? What was good about it? What would you change next time?

The following are comments received:

I learned we were very much alike… It was great to interact with them and see how our schools were the same and to see how they were different. Next time, I would want it to be longer, or do this more often. Christine

… no matter where you are, things are pretty much the same everywhere. I think it was a really cool experience. It was like were were right there with them even though we were a few hundred miles away. Leah

I thought it was great to learn about another school, to interact with kids our age from somewhere I’ve never heard of before in my whole life.

It seemed like they had a little more flexibility over there. As the conference went on, I noticed how both sets of students were really quite alike. If I could change anything- I’d like smaller groups … to know each other better. Joe

I got to see how teenagers from a different living style acted and behaved. I think we should have done it more to build up relations and become more open about subjects. The facilitator interjected too much. Karl

I think the videoconference was a good idea- but nothing got done. It should have been up to the students and what we wanted to talk about- I didn’t like the facilitator’s comments.
I actually liked the videoconference. They are similar to us. It was interesting that a lot of them don’t have jobs but have cars because their parents gave them money. Emily

I think it was an awesome experience. It was kind of cool to be sitting in our classroom and talk to others in a totally different state. I’d change how we had to watch what we said and not have to be so careful with noises that were made in the background.

I really enjoyed the videoconference with the kids from New York. It gave us a sense of their lifestyles and it gave them a sense of ours. I wish more teachers would do more of this but I guess only a teacher as cool as Mr. McKim can do something as sweet as that.

ONE rare example of the technology gods smiling on KUSD-

I arrive at Tremper 25 minutes prior to our connection with Plainedge HS Social Issues class. Two words that will stop a distance learning facilitator dead in her tracks, "NETWORK DOWN".

7:59am - One minute to scheduled connection- NETWORK UP! Clouds parted- angel chorus and all systems go!

For the next hour, teachers Sean McKim (Tremper) and Doug Abram (Plainedge HS) lead student discussion on issues such as illegal immigrants in our communities, after-school jobs, political preferences, extra-curricular activities, teenage drug use, school enrollment, gangs and more.

This connection was the first videoconference experience for everyone involved! I never tire of seeing kids when they realize that no matter if it's New York, Georgia, Utah, Idaho, Tennessee... they share the same challenges, struggle with the same issues and learn to understand and respect cultural diversity.

A few interesting DIFFERENCES to note:

MOST Tremper students have a job, while most Plainedge students do not.

Tremper students participate in many extra-curricular activiites, whereas Plainedge has NO extra-curricular groups, clubs or organizations due to severe budget cuts. Plainedge only has athletics- which, by the way- they are NY State Football Champs :-)

There is little to no dress code at Plainedge- hats, short skirts all allowed. Tremper dress-code is much more restrictive say students.

There are more President Bush supporters at Tremper than Plainedge-

Finally, on a lighter note- most students from BOTH schools watch Laguna Beach!

Iditarod "Teacher on the Trail" videoconference invitation...

A Phys Ed teacher from Eau Claire is offering to meet with students via videoconference as she prepares to participate in the Iditarod, February 2006.

"Teacher on the Trail" will be a 40 minute session in which Terrie will provide an overview of her preparation, expectations and Q & A. Connections will be scheduled between 11/1 through January.

Note above- Terrie is a classroom teacher- so we will have to keep that in mind when requesting a connection :-)

Meet Olympic Athletes & Coaches on December 5th!

I heard from Max Graves at the US Olympic Education Center at Northern Michigan University yesterday! On Monday, December 5th, the USOEC is offering two FREE videoconference sessions- 9:00am & 10:00am to meet with student athletes training for the olympics!

Learn about a day in the life of a future olympian. We'll get a few demonstrations, candid discussion and find out what drives an individual to compete at an olympic level.

I had the honor of speaking with a group of adult students from National Louis University who chose to leave their "day jobs" and seek teacher certification. The group included an airline pilot, insurance claims adjuster, "paper-pushers" and more. (I am STILL not sure of the one that claimed to be with the CIA so if there is never a posting from me after this- consider it to be true!)

In this 2+ year accelerated program, classroom educators with real-world experience will enter an entirely new, challenging, baffling, exhausting and wonderfully rewarding realm. I cannot imagine more dedicated individuals than this group.

We discussed many aspects of distance learning; corporate uses, student/generational technological expectations, opportunities, global classrooms and outstanding content.

Will virtual field trips eventually replace going to a zoo or museum? Will this technology continue to break down cultural and social barriers? What technologies will be seamless tools for this wave of educators?

I am inspired by their energy (even at 9:30pm), committment and goals, and wish them all every success as they continue their journey!

Already this year, KUSD students/staff have virtually traveled to Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, and more! From those experiences, they met kids in Florida, New Jersey, New York, Indiana, Michigan and who knows where else?

The best part about all of these wonderful, engaging opportunities is:

1. They NEVER left the building
2. Their teacher NEVER had to deal with permission slips (or lack thereof)
3. They NEVER had to board a bus
4. Everyone was back from their field before lunch
5. Never had to board a bus
6. Never had to board a bus

K2K KUSD Connections

Kindergarten teachers Lynette Powers (Southport) and Kim Frost (Somers) start their 2005 K2K (Kindergarten to Kindergarten) videoconference series this week!

Approximately once a month- the two classrooms meet via videoconference for shared projects. This month, students will meet their buddy for the "All ABout Me" connection. Students learn quickly how important it is to speak loudly, clearly and slowly for the connection. By the last connection of the year, future Tom Brokaws and Oprah Winfreys are born!

Are you interested in a K2K (Kid-to-Kid) connection for your students? How about a bookclub, geography bowl, current event debate... the possibilities are endless!

MysteryQuest: World Geography is a nation-wide event in February 2006 (specific dates TBD).

Up to six classrooms meet for a three hour session and each class presents a mystery location for the other participants to guess based on the clues given. Washington and Lance students have participated in the past and this year McKinly has indicated interest in participating.

Announcing 2006 Kenosha Collaborative: A KUSD 3rd grade videoconference exchange!

Pair up with another KUSD 3rd grade class and exchange a piece of Kenosha History!

The Kenosha Collaborative is a 45-minute videoconference for third grade classrooms within KUSD May 3-12, 2006.

Each class will deliver a 10-15-minute presentation to their videoconference “partner”, on a unique event, location or person from Kenosha’s rich past.

Registration will take place in late March 2006. You will be notified of your partner class, session date and time in early-April. The classroom connections will be scheduled starting Wed 5/3/2006 and ending Fri 5/12/2006.

Be creative! students may perform skits, sing songs, use images or original artwork to aid in your presentation.

Any remaining time will be allowed for student interaction, idea exchange and questions.

The goal of this event is to increase student awareness of local historical events, as well as practice oral presentation skills in a live, interactive connection.

Grade 3 Social Studies Standards:
1: Understands and knows how to analyze chronological relationships
2: Understands historical perspective

I received the following request- email me ASAP if you are interested:

We are interested in setting up collaborative video conferencing opportunities and wondered if you would like to join us.
Our students are PK through 5th grade, and here is a list of possible topics we will be covering in our environmental lab this year:

1. Endangered Species
2. Sea Turtles
3. Solar Cooking (we can make cookers from old notebooks and share recipes, etc)
4. Florida Everglades
5. Water testing (local rivers, ponds, canals, ocean...we could compare results with your local waters)
6. Reptiles (we have about 50 in our lab)
7. Organic gardening
8. Butterflies
9. Solar energy
GEMS units: elephants, ants, bees, arctic animals, terrarium building, and on Sandy SHores

We also are anxious to share art and music projects. Please contact me if you would like to hook up with our students on any of these topics, or if you are studying something you want to share with us, we would love to see it.

Kindergarten (YES- Kindergarten!) teachers Lynette Powers (Southport) and Kim Frost (Somers) are once again connecting their students throughout the year using videoconference technology. Starting in September with "All ABout Me" students will present and share interests to their buddy at the partner school. Projects following are "Monster", "Nursery Rhyme", "What Should You Do?", "Catch a Leprechaun", "Activity Riddles" and lastly, a face-to-face picnic in May!

The year-long progression of communication and cooperation skills is amazing! K2K is a perfect example of curricular/standards allignment, seamless technology integration and overall best practice!
